Welcome to Miksi.net
You have entered the domain of
Mika Saastamoinen. Thanks for stopping by here during your web wanderings. I hope you like it here. :)
If you're wondering what the name of the site means; "miksi" is "why" in Finnish. Some reasons for
choosing this particular domain name ("why.net") for myself are:
- it's short, a rare opportunity in domain names these days
- it's sort of derivative of my name (and I often use "miks" as my nick name in
games)
- I tend to ask questions a lot, particularly "why" questions :)
- saastamoinen.com|net were taken (of course...) and some of the other saastamoinen.* domains were
not interesting enough
- ... and anyway, [last name].com is boring and doesn't offer any future business opportunities... ;)
Contents of this site:
Well, this'n'that, basically. :) A little bit of
personal info about me, some stuff related to
games, gadgets,
mobile as well as the
current main attraction of this site, the
gallery of images taken/made by me.
That's about it for the time being. A small personal web site, that's what this is.
But who knows what will appear here in the future. I'm not yet used to having a whole web domain
for myself, so I need to think about what I'll do with this opportunity... :)
What's :
I finally managed to get at least a minimal travel blog up and running. Check out http://www.miksi.net/ontheroad/ for the latest and greatest of my travels during my sabbatical year. It's not much, but it's at least something. :)
Other recent additions:
New photos after a long while again, this time from my February safari in Tanzania! Take a trip down into the wonders of Africa. :)
I finally managed to upload the pictures of the 9-day hiking trip in the Jämtland area and mountains of Sweden from last summer. Too lazy, I am...
Anyway, feel free to take a look at the pictures.
I recently did a two-week tour of Brazil, visiting the Iguacu falls, Manaus and Amazon jungle and Rio de Janeiro.
Feel free to take a look at the pictures.
Seems like the feedback page hasn't been working right for a while now,
so I fixed it just in case somebody wants to contact me or send me some feedback on the site. Also, I removed old unnecessary stuff from
the mobile side of my site while also adding the download link to another one of my
J2ME apps, the MIDPTester. Check it out.
Check out the pics from another one-week vacation in Lappland, this time in the Autumn in the "Arm Wilderness" near the border of Norway at the tip of the "Arm of Finland".
Feel free to take a look at the pictures.
I had in June a one-week vacation which I spent in the Kevo restricted nature park in the far north in Lappland of
Finland. Feel free to take a look at the pictures.
Check out the pictures from my trip to There and back again.
I've been slacking on getting images from recent activities and happenings into my gallery, but now
I've caught up a little (still some left to do):
Right now the number of pictures in my gallery is over 800! Amazing how quickly it's grown in only
5 months since I got this site up and since I bought my digital camera. I've taken thousands of pictures
of which only a fraction gets published to the site.
I've been doing a bit of hacking around with PHP to create e.g. a very simple "publishing system"
for this site (it's in use now, in case you didn't notice :) and, perhaps more interestingly, a game! Check out the
games section for more info.
Finally!
Rockies Roundtrip'02 pictures are online! I spent most of my summer vacation this year in and
around the Rocky Mountains in the U.S.A. During the two-and-a-half week road trip I took 3000+ digital
pictures and I've finally managed to filter out and write captions to "only" 300+ images (about 10%
of the total ) for your viewing pleasure.
Note that I don't pretend any of these pictures to be masterpieces of photography; there may be a few
good ones, but a lot of them probably aren't that good. My intention with choosing the pictures I did,
was to tell the story of my trip. The albums and the pictures inside albums are in chronological order
and hopefully that and the captions give you an idea of "what I went through"(in a positive sense... :).
Also, check out the
high level and
detail maps of the trip to get a better idea of where I travelled and where the different places
are.
But in case the 300+ pictures, divided into 19 different locations (10-30 pics in each), are too much
for you, I'll recommend a couple of my favourite locations, which you absolutely must see, if you don't
have time or interest to see everything:
Also, feel free to check the other recent additions to my gallery, pictures from:
A word about how this site works:
At the top of the page is the navigation menu. The highlighted item is the current page.
The other underlined items are obviously the links to the respective pages. At the bottom of the
page you can see a link back upto the top of the page.Generally underlined words are links to
other pages or sites. Note that other external sites open up in their own browser windows.
Both at the top and bottom of the pages are also "Send feedback" link which opens a form where you can
send me some (hopefully :) constructive feedback about this site or the contents of the pages. Feel
free to use this feature!
P.S. In case you're using some other browser than Microsoft Internet Explorer (specifically v5.5 :),
I make no guarantees about whether this site looks any good or not. For the time being I just can't
be bothered to install other browsers, and test and tweak these pages for anything else. Who cares
anyway, IE has taken over the world anyway...
